Making a Million On

Ever since my wife, Kate, opted for early retirement from United Airlines, I have been hunting for something for her to do so she won’t interrupt my writing.

I read that almost a million people make a living on eBay.

A friend buys tickets to Broadway plays and resells them on eBay, she’s a scalper.

Our scalper buddy told us that sometimes she makes five or ten thousand dollars a month selling tickets on eBay.

I decided this would be a perfect business for Kate.

We dove into Scalping 101 two months ago by buying 25 Broadway tickets at a cost of $2,860.

The play was Three Days of Rain.  Julia Roberts was the star.

People had warned me that it was impossible to make money when the swine theater critics were unnecessarily cruel in their reviews.  (They were unnecessarily cruel to Ms. Roberts.)

I got the last laugh.

We sold our tickets on eBay for a total of $3,378.

And there were countless bonuses.  We never had to leave our  house which we turned into a giant office.

We decorated the living room with tomahawks.  (After all, what better icon for a scalper to have?)

We battled no traffic (occasionally, just each other Note: Even in mild horseplay, tomahawk replicas can leave skull dents).

True, after we paid eBay listing fees and PayPal postal & financial fees, our pre-tax profit fell to $58.00.  This is not bad considering that we spent less than 300 (rounding it off) hours on our computers communicating with potential buyers.

Kate, who is reading this over my shoulder, pointed out that we also sent Sees chocolate coupons to some of the ticket buyers we made a killing on.

I counter-pointed-out that the Sees chocolates was a sweet PR coup.

Never mind that our Sees coup brought our actual bottom line profit down to $18.00 for two fun months.

We earned 100 per cent positive customer feedback.

Kate, being a pessimist, seemed slightly discouraged. Whack! She inflicted a third skull dent on me.

I explained that even a fool Harvard MBA could see that if we made $9.00 a month on a $2,800 (more rounding it off) investment, then it was obvious that we had unearthed a foolproof formulae to generate one million dollars without stepping out  the door.

Harvesting that million dollars (more rounding off), simply involves buying a larger number of tickets for our next eBay auction.

Kate says it’s madness to hand over chocolates to anyone who will buy a ticket from us.

Okay, okay, maybe I overdid it slightly with the free chocolates.

I will modify our reward program: The first thousand customers  who purchase 100 tickets from us will get a box of chocolates.

I’m giggling all the way to the bank.
